Tulip Tree Leaf Heart Golden Window Suncatcher / Hanging Tile
A few years ago I was given some Tulip Tree leaves for a commission I was working on. When they burn out they retain the structure of the leaf really well inside the glass. I only have a few leaves left and decided to cut some hearts out of them and frame them in a golden window for hanging tiles / suncatchers. There are therefore a limited number of pink golden window tulip tree leaf suncatchers available.
Working with silver leaf can be really quite challenging at times and the failure rate of applying the leaf to the glass can be quite high due it’s tendency to float away or crease up and my patience levels will only allow me to make a few of these at a time, but it’s so rewarding when they come out of the kiln almost perfectly.
Each piece is made by hand using actual tulip tree leaves. Assembling all materials between two sheets of clear glass I used the leaves with silver leaf, copper oxide and glass powder. The hoop for the ribbon is made from NiChrome wire. These are then put into the kiln at temperatures above 800 degrees centigrade to produce the fused piece. The silver leaf reacts in the heat of the kiln producing a translucent golden colour whilst the leaf burns out leaving an imprint of itself.
